The Setbacks originally formed in the autumn of 2001 from the ashes of two Bath bands Mighty Joe Young and Tweaker, playing our debut gig at the now (sadly long-gone) Porter Butt in Bath the following July.
We’ve had a few line-up changes over the years but myself , Ade and Scott remain from the early days with Neil and Pete joining us in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Ade has been our chief songwriter throughout.
Our style has developed a bit over the years from a faster US skate punk style in our earlier days to incorporate more ‘classic’ ’77 punk and even a bit of metal and grunge. Our influences include The Clash, Ramones, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Stiff Little Fingers, The Jam, Buzzcocks, UK Subs, The Damned, The Who, Pearl Jam, Rancid, Leatherface and Bad Religion.
Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of sharing stages with some of the big names in punk like Lagwagon, The Misfits, UK Subs, The Avengers, DOA, 999, Sham 69, Goldblade,The Outcasts, Subhumans, TSOL, The Pack, The Vibrators, Vice Squad, TV Smith, Drongos for Europe, Splodgenessabounds, Citizen Fish along with more contemporary bands like Dragster, Pussycat and the Dirty Johnsons, Pizza Tramp, Blue Carpet Band, Dirtbox Disco, Wonk Unit and The DeRellas to name (drop) but a few.
Highlights would have to be playing Rebellion festival in Blackpool, the Resolution festival at the 100 Club and opening the Big Cheese Big Send off at the O2 Forum in Kentish town in 2017. There was also a particularly crazy gig at the Chelsea in Bristol where we ended up headlining when the A-Heads pulled out, the crowd just went nuts.
