Carlo Keshishian

Artist and broadcaster, Carlo Keshishian, is an urban shaman in the making, who can take you  through half remembered places and psychic spaces.  When you look at his work you are looking at a completed object but what you also see is a process, a journey, of unclear beginnings and uncertain endings.  To travel A to Z style through each component part of his work is an act of impossibility, inevitably you lose your way and, let’s face it, to pay such attention to detail alone is to lose the point of the work because you wont see the wood for the trees, fascinating though they are.  You need to step back, look at the bigger picture, what do you see? feel? or find?   Absorb the whole forest before venturing  back to the detail, scrutinising  some pocket of information this time, aware that  no matter how closely you follow a path it will always lead you awry. Or as George Clinton succinctly put it “Free Your Mind and Your Asss Will Follow”

The intricacies of Carlos work pulsate, lines fluctuate, these meta doodles of rambling patterns mesmerise. Sometimes from this ground figurative drawings emerge or a gathering of colourful cartoon caricatures, comical and disorientating with their grimacing  grins, passages of text either float in the foreground or sink back into the distance, all is fragmented and joined together .

Music plays an important role in the life of Carlo Keshishian, for as well as making his own personalised artwork he has been the deliverer of some of the best jazz tracks that you are likely to hear on the airwaves.  Ok, Jazz is a pretty broad term, ranging from trad to fusion and beyond, what I do know is that if I were asked to make a comparison with any other radio station I would have to say it is (for those who remember ) akin to listening to the late John Peel shows in the evening, musically different  but with the same breadth, knowledge and love of what sounds good and true even with the occasional challenging track.

His radio show is archived here: www.mixcloud.com/see27beats
